PLAYLIST FOR GIRLS

When I first I thought of making this playlist I thought it would be a quick blog.  I WAS SO WRONG!  Finding music that is not only creative and inspiring but is also appropriate for a young person is no small feat!  This playlist is for pre-teen/teen girls who use their brains, have self-respect, appreciate art and are in touch with their spirituality.

For this particular playlist, I’ve given myself a couple of simple parameters.  The songs are sung by female performers and have been released in 2000 or later.

Playlist for A Teen Daughter:

  1. Just A Ride” – Jem
  2. Follow” – Brandi Carlile
  3. Extraordinary Machine” – Fiona Apple
  4. Breakable” – Ingrid Michaelson
  5.  “Cheerleader” – St. Vincent
  6. Cut It Out” – Anya Marina
  7. Say Goodnight and Go” – Imogen Heap
  8. Fidelity” – Regina Spektor
  9. A Woman’s Worth” – Alicia Keys
  10. Paper Doll” – Rachel Yamagata
  11. Brick by Boring Brick” – Paramore
  12. Help, I’m Alive” – Metric
  13. Maybe There’s A Loving God” – Sara Groves
  14. Video” – India Arie
  15. Hope for the Hopeless” – A Fine Frenzy
  16. Maps” – Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs
  17. Let Go” – Frou Frou (I can’t find the official website for her… if you find it let me know!)

The following artists are wonderful as well though the degree of appropriate-ness for pre-teen/teen girls depends on the song. In fact, I like some of these artists better than some on the playlist but didn’t include them for various reasons: The Civil Wars, Dido, Feist, Blonde Redhead, Cat Power, Joanna Newsom, P.J Harvey, Ani DifrancoNiko CaseMeika Pauley, Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, Bjork, Jenny Lewis, Haley Bonar, Colbie Caillat, Taylor Swift

Who did I forget?
