13 Songs That Make Parenting a Toddler More Fun!

Raising a toddler… wow! If you’ve got one, you know what I mean.

I absolutely adore my son and generally feel like I’m pretty lucky. He usually obeys. He’s positive and smiles a lot. He usually eats his vegetables and picks up his toys. But I haven’t figured out the potty training thing yet and every once in a while (a lot more often since he turned two) my son throws a really terrible, embarrassing, screaming, throwing, kicking tantrum!

I’ve tried several different tactics for calming the storm but one method has proven to be the most effective so far…

A while back my son randomly picked the TV show “Daniel’s Neighborhood” (a cartoon spin-off of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood) from a line-up of shows on Netflix. We were watching the episode when one of the songs really stuck out to me. It was called, “When You Feel So Mad That You Want To Roar”. As the song played a couple times during the show I sang it under my breath so I could remember it later. I had the distinct feeling that it might help my son calm down.

It helped me that same day!

One minute he was screaming bloody murder, the next he was smiling.

I’ve found several songs that help me be a better parent to my toddler. Here’s a list of some of those songs & their uses:

1. When You Feel So Mad that you Want to Roar

(from Daniel’s Neighborhood – click on “Music” and scroll until you see this song) I literally used this song with my son yesterday! Be sure to count to 4 slowly!

2. When We Do Something New

(from Daniel’s Neighborhood – click on “Music” and scroll until you see this song) There are two versions; one about school and one about visiting the doctor’s office but I think you could easily adapt them to be about anything new.

3. Clean Up Song by Super Simple Songs.

Some of you are like, “This song is so 5 years ago” but let me tell ya, it’s news to 1st time moms! I had never heard of it until my son started singing it on his own while cleaning up his toys one day (whoever taught it to him… THANK YOU)! This is not the coolest video in the world but the song is super catchy and my son will pick up practically anything if we sing this song with him.

4. Pick it Up by GoGo13.

This tune is not as sing-able as the “Clean Up Song” but it will definitely get you & your kid moving and the video is cute!

5. House Rules by Jeremy Plays Guitar.

“Because we don’t live in a zoo!” Probably every family has these rules, why not sing them!

6. Brush, Brush, Brush by Of Montreal.

What’s cooler than an Indie band singing a catchy song that makes your kid want to brush their teeth!

7. We Gotta Be Clean by Guster

Another motivating, catchy song that both parents & kids can appreciate!

8. Moon, Moon, Moon by Laurie Berkner Band.

This is one sweet, sweet song you can sing to your toddler at bedtime!

9. Just Because it’s Different Doesn’t Mean it’s Scary by I’m From Barcelona.

In the same vein as “When We Do Something New”, this song is positive and adventurous and just simple enough for a toddler to enjoy!

10. Potty Dance by Ralph’s World.

Ahhh, one of the battles of toddler-dome. Pottytraining. Why not dance about it? Plus I’m a HUGE fan of Ralph’s World! For one, he’s local– Chicago represent! Secondly, his songs are so so so so fun and memorable!

11. The Coffee Song by Ralph’s World.

Speaking of Ralph’s World, this is my jam! I was cranky today until I had my coffee and then I was like, “Duh, I just needed coffee!”

12. Little Wings by Frances England.

I wish there was a video for this song. It perfectly describes the toddlers you & I love so much!

13. Day You Were Born by Frances England.

A sweet song + an artistic video = good feelings!

If you missed it before, here’s a link to another one of my playlists, “Playful Playlist for Kids
